Our New Pinewood Derby Track is Here!

img_6093I came home from work today happy to find 213 lbs of cardboard boxes full of our new BestTrack Pinewood Derby track sitting outside my garage! I snuck a peak inside one of the boxes as I dug for the assembly instructions and was very pleased with the quality of the aluminum parts that I saw. The track will require an initial assembly that will probably take a few hours, and after that will break down into a few large sections. I will be keeping a photo journal of the assembly, testing, and setup all the way through our inaugural race on March 14th in the photos section. We are awaiting the arrival of our new timer system so hopefully that will arrive soon, too.

3rd Annual Paoli Tubing Event

img_6044Well, we just wrapped up our 3rd annual tubing event at Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Indiana. We had some unpredictable weather including some rain, some snow, and a lot of cold. But if you ask any scout there if they had a good time, I’ll just bet they say “YES!” I didn’t have much of a chance to take photos of the event so if you have pictures form Paoli please email them to the Cubmaster. Thanks!

Let the Pinewood Derby car building begin!

As of this post, there are only 3 more weeks to complete your cars before Pinewood Derby! When designing and building your car remember the number 1 rule… Have Fun! Building a Pinewood Derby car with your son can be a great experience for your family to work together to achieve something. It can be an opportunity for your son to learn how to use a variety of new tools and woodworking techniques. Following are a couple of last minute tips for you when building…

Adjust your axles so that your care rolls straight. If it rolls with a curve to one side, your car will wobble it’s way down the track. However make sure that all your wheels touch the track according to the rule book.

Bring your car to Test and Tune night just slightly underweight. It is much easier to add a little weight than to remove it. Use a kitchen scale or find a friend with a postage scale to get you close. You can always add a little weight after your car has been weighed. I usually recommend you shoot for around 4.9 oz., and bring a little weight with you. There will be glue at build shop that night.

Don’t glue your axles in place yet. If your wheels aren’t aligned properly at inspection, you will need to adjust them. We will allow you to glue your axles after inspection.

Use graphite wheel lubricant. Avoid the white powder lubricant sold at hobby stores. It doesn’t work near as good as graphite. Lubricate your car with graphite prior to coming to inspection or outside the building. We will not allow lubricating inside the building due to mess it creates on the floors and tables.

Pick a theme! Even if you don’t win the race, you might come home with a design award! A list of the themes that we will judge on are on the Pinewood Derby page.

Read the rule book. Make sure you thoroughly read the Official Pack 371 Design and Build Rule Book to avoid doing something to your car or it’s components that will cause you to fail inspection.

Blue and Gold Banquet a Big Success

img_0205Our annual Blue and Gold Banquet this Saturday went very well. The cakes were great, the food was good and everyone had a good time. Special thanks to the kitchen staff at West Side Christian Church for the hospitality and the great food. A huge thanks to Gayle Reid our Blue and Gold Committee Chairwoman, and to the rest of the committee and volunteers that came early to set up and to those who stayed late to clean up. A very big thank you to all our Tiger Cubs that pitched in with Gayle on that wonderful rendition of our National Anthem. And another big thank you to Brad Lisembee and his family for helping out with the auction, prizes and games.

371 Receives Grant for New Pinewood Track

Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Ryan Reynolds and the Evansville Courier, Pack 371 has just received a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation. The grant money will be applied towards the purchase of a new 6 lane aluminum Pinewood Derby track and computer timing system. This new track will replace our old wooden track that has served us well, but was certainly showing it’s age. The aluminum track will be much stronger and faster, and the timing system will make race day a lot more manageable with 60+ racers. Thank you again to Mr. Reynolds, the staff at the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Evansville Courier, and all the boys in our pack that sold popcorn this year for making this purchase happen.

Scout Sunday Cancelled

Donuts Delivered!

Donuts Delivered!

Unfortunately Scout Sunday was canceled this morning due to a last minute church service cancellation which was due to weather conditions. So what do you do with 180 donuts, 4 gallons of milk, 3 gallons of orange juice, and 11 restless cub scouts? Well, if you’re a good scout, you find some hungry people, and you get to work. So that’s what we did. After a few phone calls we we found a local shelter that was still in need of some breakfast items. We packed up, headed over to Evansville Rescue Mission and delivered donuts and drinks. Fortunately we were able to turn this into a positive experience for these 11 boys by helping out some local folks in need. Thank you to all that showed up this morning!
