RULES AND REGULATIONS

Please read this prior to working on your Regatta boat. Make sure that any tips or advice you receive on the building process are within these guidelines. Boats that are outside of these guidelines will not be allowed to race.

Race Day and Check in
Doors open at 5:45 PM on Friday January 20th. Racing starts promptly at 6:30. Please arrive as early as you can to get checked in. It takes some time to create the brackets. Late arrivals will not be allowed to race.

The Big Rules
You must build a new boat from the kit provided. Buying another boat or using a boat previously raced is not allowed… enjoy your time building your boat with your son!

Use the components within this kit, and no other components for the primary parts of the boat. You don’t have to use all of the parts, but you may not use other materials for those parts. For instance, if you plan to use a rudder with your boat, you must use the one provided. The same goes for the hull of the boat, the mast, the sail, and the keel.

Dimensions
The finished boat may be no longer than the hull provided in your kit (7”). It may be no wider than the widest point of the untrimmed sail on your kit.

Modifying The Components
You may modify the components any way you see fit to make it fast as long as the final boat is within the guidelines in this document. You may reshape the hull, cut the mast, trim the sail, etc.

Placement of The Components
You may place the components where you think is best on the hull as long as the finished boat remains within the dimensional guidelines outlined above. Your kit comes with a hole for the mast. You do not have to use that hole. You are free to create your own.

Finishing / Decorating the Hull
You should paint the hull of the boat with a non-water-based paint. You can further decorate your boat with stickers or glue-ons as long as the additions are decorative and non-functional, and the finished boat falls within the dimensional guidelines. Your son’s full name and rank should be on the FRONT of the sail somewhere.

Racing
We race in boats two at a time (one on one) in two sealed standard aluminum gutters cut to 8’ long and filled about halfway with water. Boys will receive 1 straw at the beginning of the race, which they will use to blow into the sail to propel it forward. Boats will start with the rear touching the back of the gutter. On the judges signal boys will start racing. The first boat to touch the opposite end of their gutter wins. Boys can ONLY touch their boat to right it should it tip over or get stuck. The may not push the boat forward at anytime. Doing so will result in a warning and the race will be rerun if the offender wins. If both sides are warned for pushing, the race will be stopped and restarted.

All racing is double-elimination style. Each rank will race first, then the winners from each rank will compete in a best of the pack championship. There will be awards for 1st place in each rank, and for the overall champion.
