Scout Glossary

If you’re new to Scouting, you may hear some terms you’re not familiar with. Use this handy glossary to help you along the way!

Akela (pronounced Ah-KAY-la)

Akela is the Parent/Guardian partner of the Cub Scout that helps the Scout along his way. Akela is a good leader.

Webelos

Webelos is a two year program. Webelos scouts are 4th and 5th year Cub Scouts (1st and 2nd year Webelos). Webelos is the last step in Cub Scouting, and the final step prior to Boy Scouts. Webelos means We‘ll Be Loyal Scouts.

Tags

Tags or “Tag-alongs” are the brothers or sisters of Cub Scouts. Often we have Pack or Den activities where these younger siblings are encouraged to Tag-along.

Achievements

Achievements are the tasks that are outlined in your Cub Scout Handbook. Each rank (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) has it’s own handbook, and set of achievements that are required to advance to the next rank.

Advancements

Advancements are the material rewards (patches, pins, belt loops, beads, etc.) that scouts are awarded as they complete the achievements outlined in their handbooks. Advancements are generally distributed at a ceremony at Pack Meetings.
